10 YISHI & CO - Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) can hamper efforts to alleviate poverty and also slow down the achievement of international development goals. If the people in the productive age fell ill and died, of course, this will affect the level of productivity.
Coupled with high treatment costs, thus threatening the economy of the individual and the state. Since 2011-2025, the total economic losses due to lower non-communicable disease in the countries of low and middle income such as Indonesia is estimated to reach US $ 7 billion. While the estimated costs incurred in order to reduce the number of non-communicable disease in the world reached US $ 11, 2 million.
This was said by Minister of Health (Minister of Health), Nila Djuwita Farid Moeloek, when opening the meeting PTM Asean or the Asean Regional Forum on Non Communicable Diseases (NCD), in Jakarta, Tuesday (25/8).
According to Minister of Health, PTM much influenced outside the health sector, such as public policy in the fields of agriculture, education, food production, trade, taxation, and urban development.
About 80 percent of NCDs can be prevented by diet and lifestyle accordingly. Therefore, the global community has the opportunity to change the direction of non-communicable disease epidemic.
"Early death due to non-communicable disease can be significantly reduced through government policy to reduce tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity, and providing universal health care," said Minister of Health.
In addition, the government is also expected to prohibit all forms of tobacco advertising, replacing trans fats with polyunsaturated fats, restrict or prohibit advertising of alcohol. Promoting breastfeeding, carrying out public awareness programs on diet and physical activity, and prevent cervical cancer through early examination in health facilities is also part of the prevention of NCDs.
Therefore, the Minister of Health hopes NCD-2 is not only a means of sharing experiences among ASEAN member countries, but also to help other countries to give an understanding that NCDs can be prevented from beyond the health sector.
The event lasted for three days followed by 125 participants from nine ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam as well as Japan. The delegates consisting of government officials and focal point PTM, nongovernmental organizations, professional organizations, academia, and health officials at the provincial level.
